Fishing port<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you approach the Walled City through the San Pedro gate or the Papa Luna gate, built in the 15th century, you can head to the fishing port to see each boat\u2019s catch of the day\u2014when it\u2019s trawling, from Monday to Friday from 4:00 PM onwards.<br\/>Located below the castle walls and sheltered from heavy swell by a huge breakwater, this port is, along with tourism, one of the area\u2019s main economic drivers. The House of Shells<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you keep walking around <strong>Pe\u00f1\u00edscola<\/strong> along its seafront wall, you\u2019ll reach one of the most photogenic houses in town: the <strong>House of Shells<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This house has a fa\u00e7ade covered in seashells, and tells the story of Aunt Justa\u2019s personal triumph over adversity\u2014its owner and a pioneer of tourism in the City in the Sea.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">? Pe\u00f1\u00edscola Lighthouse<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you keep climbing up towards the Castle, you\u2019ll find the fantastic <strong>Pe\u00f1\u00edscola lighthouse<\/strong>, next to the Castle, built at the end of the 19th century and considered one of the ten most beautiful in Spain.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inside of the adjoining building is currently used for the Castle ticket offices, but you\u2019ll find a viewpoint there with <strong>beautiful views of the sea and Pe\u00f1\u00edscola Castle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivepeniscola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/faro-1400x933.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-957\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Pe\u00f1\u00edscola Castle<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entering the Papa Luna Castle, built at the highest point of the rock that dominates the town, is one of the <strong>best things to do in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola<\/strong> and an absolute must on your visit to Pe\u00f1\u00edscola.<br\/>Built by the Templars on the remains of an old Arab alcazaba between 1294 and 1307, it was remodelled in 1411 to become the pontifical seat of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benedicto_XIII_(antipapa)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Benedict XIII<\/a>, the famous Papa Luna. Church of Our Lady of the Ermitana<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you leave the Castle you\u2019ll find the <strong>Church of Our Lady of the Ermitana<\/strong>, the town\u2019s patron saint and a centre of popular devotion\u2014an unusual Baroque religious building constructed in the early 18th century.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivepeniscola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/visita-guiada-peniscola_entradas-castillo-papa-luna_iglesia_ermita_castellon_comunidad-valenciana_buendia-1400x840.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-962\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Artillery Park<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you return to <strong>Santos M\u00e1rtires Street<\/strong> and keep heading down towards the sea, you\u2019ll reach the <strong>Artillery Park<\/strong>, a former military area with ramps, casemates and tunnels that lets you appreciate the scale of Pe\u00f1\u00edscola\u2019s spectacular fort. Sierra de Irta<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sierra de Irta Natural Park and Marine Reserve, located south of the town, is the largest unspoilt stretch of Mediterranean coastline from the French border all the way to Cabo de Gata in Almer\u00eda, and is undoubtedly another of the <strong>most beautiful places to see in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola<\/strong>.<br\/>In this protected natural park you can do several hiking and cycling routes that will take you to hidden coves and beaches between cliffs, and historic buildings such as the Badum and Ebr\u00ed watchtowers and the castles of Xivert and Pulpis.<br\/>Before starting any route, whether by bike or on foot, we recommend stopping by the Natural Park Interpretation Centre to find out the difficulty level and all its points of interest.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivepeniscola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_20230319_115003-1400x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-970\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Beaches<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can\u2019t leave the City in the Sea without taking in its fantastic beaches. The town has beaches and coves for all tastes, with the magnificent North Beach standing out, with a wide sandy stretch and almost six kilometres in length. Beaches to enjoy, of course, in the summer season, but also throughout the rest of the year.
