{"id":1306,"date":"2023-01-04T17:55:23","date_gmt":"2023-01-04T17:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vivepeniscola.com\/mandarin-or-clementine\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T07:19:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T07:19:49","slug":"mandarin-or-clementine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vivepeniscola.com\/en\/mandarin-or-clementine\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandarin or clementine?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the arrival of the first cold spells, the citrus season begins in our land.<br\/>A powerful source of <strong>vitamin C<\/strong>, it has traditionally been considered the orange&#8217;s &#8220;poor sister&#8221; due to<br\/>its lower vitamin content, but it also provides other micronutrients and vitamins that<br\/>make it one of the <strong>most beneficial<\/strong> fruits for your health.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>It is also a fascinating fruit because of its <strong>rich history<\/strong>. Every mandarin that reaches our table is a history lesson in itself&#8230;<br\/>For example, did you know that its name, mandarin, is actually due to the <strong>color of the robes<\/strong><br\/>worn by the rulers of ancient China? And by the way, the first citrus fruits to reach our table are mandarins&#8230; or are they clementines? What&#8217;s the difference?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>They say that at the end of the 19th century, the French priest <strong>Cl\u00e9ment Rodier<\/strong> was doing social work for orphans in <strong>Algeria<\/strong>. Around 1900, this plant enthusiast had the great idea of collecting some pollen from the flowers of a bitter orange tree and using it to fertilize the flowers of another tree, the mandarin. These flowers bore fruit and Brother Cl\u00e9ment collected the seeds, planted them, and waited patiently.<br\/>As a result, trees of a <strong>completely new species<\/strong> grew, and two years later they bore<br\/>their first fruit. These fruits were completely new: <strong>they were seedless<\/strong>, their skin was very thin, and<br\/>they had a low acid content. Since then, they have been cultivated in Mediterranean areas, and in 1929 clementines were named in honor of Father Cl\u00e9ment.<br\/>Later, in 1953, a clementine tree in Nules underwent a spontaneous mutation&#8230;<br\/>By chance, the <strong>clemenules<\/strong> were born, considered the best mandarin variety in the world<br\/>to date, as they are larger and better adapted to the land than the original clementines.<br\/>Undoubtedly, a gift for those of us who can enjoy them fresh and newly picked from the tree, or<br\/>as an ingredient in countless preparations.
