Yesterday, accompanied by a great group from Valencia, we had the chance to visit the best-kept secret of the Parish Church of Sant Bertomeu in Benicarló… its crypt.
It is a small, vaulted chamber carved into the rock, where it is estimated there were a total of 202 burials, all dating from before 1787. A truly interesting story.
It currently features a lifting hatch that provides access to 20 steps, which in turn lead down to the niches.
The 275 years of history behind the construction of the Church of Sant Bertomeu are, without a doubt, a great reason to visit this Baroque gem.
Our sincerest thanks to Father Carles for being such a wonderful host!!
