Eight centuries ago, the Sierra de Irta was a land of political and religious frontier. Along the rugged ravines of these mountainous lands, Muslim herds moved through. The Christian kingdoms of the north—and especially the County of Barcelona and the Kingdom of Aragon—tried to seize the northern lands of Xarq-Al-Andalus.
The emirs of Balansiya (the Arabic name for Valencia) tried to protect their people by building castles, such as Pulpis. After the Christian occupation, these castles became the seat of the new government of the religious and military Order of the Temple and its successors, the Order of Montesa.
