Seven centuries ago, livestock farming was the main activity of the ancient Maestrazgo de Montesa. Wool from the Maestrazgo was highly prized in the textile centers of northern Italy. Every year, for generations, shepherds drove their herds to the lowlands for the winter.
The Sierra de Irta, located by the sea and with abundant water sources, was a spot visited by herds even coming from the south of France. Additionally, from the bay of Peñíscola, a true natural bay, wool was shipped to Italian ports.
This activity, spanning several centuries, has left behind a heritage that we will discover while enjoying this route. Get to know some of the corrals of the Sierra de Irta, located closer than you might expect.
